Join the Celebration: PA NOW and Title IX Turn 35
This year marks the 35th anniversary of both the founding of Pennsylvania NOW and the passage of Title IX, mandating equal access for women in education and sports programs. Pennsylvania NOW members and guests will celebrate both of these historic events during the annual convention, "Remembering Our Past, Building the Future,, on October 12-14 at the Pittsburgh Hilton.
We will be honoring local and state NOW founders and leaders during the convention and celebration. We've invited founders of PA NOW chapters and encouraged them to bring stories and memorabilia to share and the conference will include an historical "poster" display highlighting PA NOW's history. We hope that many will join us and share in "Remembering our past and building the future" of equality for women in Pennsylvania.
Join our keynote speaker, Eleanor Smeal, Executive Director of the Feminist Majority and the Founding President of Pennsylvania NOW, Inc., as she shares her memories of the history of our founding and offers insights on the future. Peggy Pennypacker, a consultant and expert on Title IX access for girls in middle and high schools in PA, will be sharing the history of Title IX in Pennsylvania. During this session, we will recognize members of the Slippery Rock University field hockey, swimming, and water polo teams and honor them for their successful Title IX legal challenge that reinstituted their university's athletic programs.
Latifa Lyles, NOW's VP of Membership, will be joining the convention to offer her perspectives on racial justice and she also will be part of a panel "Economic Justice Starts Here: Strategies to Stop Employment Discrimination Against Moms and Caregivers."
If you are, or if you know someone who was a founding member or leader of a local chapter in PA, we would like to hear from you. Please contact our Convention Manager, Phyllis Wetherby at panowconvention@aol.com or at 412-241-8329. Learn more about the conference and be sure to register early!
