The votes are in and the message of the midterm elections was clear: end the war and bring home the troops. Many of those coming to Washington, D.C., for the 110th Congress ran and won in November on anti-war platforms. NOW, along with CodePink, United for Peace and Justice, and other organizations will be marching on January 27, 2007, bringing the mandate for peace to the Capitol. You can help ensure that Congress acts on our message by joining activists in a mass mobilization of the mandate for peace. NOW is encouraging members and activists from across the country to travel to Washington, D.C., for the weekend. Our joint goal is to have at least one person representing every congressional district.

Plan to stay the weekend. On Saturday we march. On Sunday we gather with other women's rights activists to train, learn and share at a Women and Peace Forum. And on Monday we visit our U.S. Senators and Representatives to remind them that we want an end to the war; safety in the homes, communities, and streets of Iraq; and economic justice for the Iraqi people trying to rebuild their country.

The Bush Administration has not changed its tune and, come January, we will be listening to the State of the Union address — and listening for a call for peace. The new Democratic-led Congress will just have been sworn in and members of Congress and their aides have told us that this is the time to keep the pressure on by visiting Congressional offices. Congress has the power to end this war by stopping its funding, and they can fund the rebuilding of Iraq — they just need the encouragement.
