Tell Senators Clinton and Murray:
Senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) need your help.
Right now, they are alone in the Senate standing up for women's access to Emergency
Contraception. They are demanding that the FDA issue a decision on the emergency
contraceptive known as Plan B and they're refusing to confirm Andrew von Eschenbach,
President Bush's nomination for FDA commissioner, until a decision is made.
They tried this last year when President Bush nominated Lester Crawford but
they lifted their "hold" on the nomination in exchange for a promise
of a decision on EC. As you know, we're still waiting for that decision. Having
learned the hard way that the Bush administration doesn't honor its promises,
Sens. Clinton and Murray can't back down this time. But they need to know how
many of us support these efforts on behalf of women.

Background:
In 2005, Senators Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) put a
hold on President Bush's nomination of Lester Crawford for FDA commissioner
until the FDA made a decision on wider availability of Emergency Contraception
(EC?also called the morning-after pill). They lifted the "hold"
on Crawford's nomination after being promised publicly that a decision would
be made promptly, and Crawford was confirmed.
Then they double-crossed the two senators, and all of us. There's still no
decision on EC.
Crawford has resigned, and Bush has nominated a new commissioner, Dr. Andrew
von Eschenbach, who has been the acting FDA head since Crawford's departure.
In a "fool me once but not twice" scenario, Senators Clinton and
Murray have once again blocked the FDA nomination.
Sign the petition to Senators Clinton and Murray asking them to STAY STRONG.
No more promises or sleight of hand from the FDA, HHS, or this Administration.
Don't give in this time.

We need to support Senators Clinton and Murray in their efforts to "free"
EC from the FDA's political stranglehold. We will be delivering these petitions
to Senators Murray and Clinton, and to other Senators who need to hear from
us that Emergency Contraception prevents unwanted pregnancies and must be made
more easily available to women everywhere.
