Samuel Alito Confirmed -- Let Your Senators Know What You Think
Action Needed:
Judge Samuel Alito was confirmed Jan. 31 to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, by a vote of 58-42. While we recognize the 42 senators who voted against confirmation, the crucial vote happened the day before, when senators voted on whether or not to end debate on this nomination. Because the Republican leadership had enough votes to confirm Samuel Alito, a filibuster was the only option to prevent the confirmation.

Women all across the country expected that our senators who call themselves pro-choice and claim to be supporters of women's rights would use every measure available to prevent the confirmation of a judge who would fail to protect women's rights and civil liberties. We have been sorely disappointed by many senators who failed to support the filibuster, the only measure that could have prevented Alito's confirmation. Their vote to shut down debate had the effect of anointing Judge Alito as a Supreme Court Justice. Their vote against him on Tuesday was symbolism without substance, and pleased no one.
Please take a moment today to email your senators about their vote on the filibuster. Those who supported it did so in the face of much ridicule and animosity, some of it from within their own party, and they and deserve our gratitude. Those who did not support the filibuster need to hear from us that we expected more of them.
