Urge Senators to Vote Against Nominee Holmes

Action Needed:

Please take action and urge your senator to oppose the confirmation of the U.S. District Court judicial nominee James Leon Holmes, an extremist who is a vociferous women's rights opponent. A vote on Holmes' nomination is set for the week of July 6. Please use NOW's interactive political page to send a formatted message or craft one in your own words. Take action NOW, and prevent James Leon Holmes from being confirmed.

Background:

George W. Bush has again gone outside the mainstream and nominated a right-wing extremist to the bench, this time for the Eastern District of Arkansas. Holmes has actively worked against reproductive rights by serving as the president of Arkansas Right to Life, as well as advocating for an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution that would ban abortion throughout the state. He even stated that "the concern for rape victims is a red herring because conceptions from rape occur with approximately the same frequency as snowfall in Miami."

He again showed his extremist abortion stance by making comments that equate abortion rights supporters with Nazis. Holmes also worked as legal counsel for anti-choice groups, and defended a man accused of trespassing on the property of an abortion clinic.

Furthermore, Holmes wrote that the proper role of women in marriage should be a biblical one, in which a "wife is to subordinate herself to her husband" and "place herself under the authority of the man." He also made it clear that he would block advancements in gay rights: "abortion brought with it artificial contraception on demand with recognition of homosexual relations to follow."

Holmes' advocacy against reproductive rights and his position against women's equality, gay rights, and the separation of church and state make it doubtful that he would be able to separate his views from his obligation to be fair and impartial as a federal judge.

A confirmation vote is scheduled to take place on the Senate floor on the week of July 6. Please call or email your Senators and urge them to reject Holmes' confirmation.
