Help save equality in athletics programs by sending a message by November 29!
As many of you know, opponents of Title IX have swung into high gear. The Bush administration designated its Commission on Opportunities in Athletics to hold regional "town hall" meetings across the country throughout the summer and fall. The final town hall meeting was held November 20-21 in San Diego. In December and January, there will be two more meetings when the commissioners will write the report.
It is unclear at this point what the report's recommendations will be, but the so-called Opportunity in Athletics Commission has many members who are hostile to Title IX and do not support the goal of educational equity. And with conservative Republicans again controlling both the House and Senate ? and George W. in the White House ? we could lose Title IX's guarantee of equality in education.
You have until November 29 to send in your comments via email, fax, or regular mail. It is very important for each and every supporter of women's equality to submit a statement as we know that our opponents will be recruiting thousands of letter-writers attacking Title IX.
Comments are due November 29, 2002 and can be mailed to the Office of the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Ave., SW, ROB-3, Room 3060, Washington, D.C. 20202; faxed to 202/260-4560 or emailed to OpportunityinAthletics@ed.gov. Further information for the Commission is available online.
Click here to send a message, and thank you for your crucial support of athletic and educational opportunities for women and girls.
