2007 National NOW Conference in Detroit, July 13-15 "Fast Forward: Women Take Charge"
July 11, 2006
The Detroit area will host the 2007 National NOW Conference and Young Feminist Leadership Institute this weekend at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn. NOW's conference theme this year, Fast Forward: Women Take Charge, reflects the recent rise of women in political leadership, and the need to foster and inspire a new generation of women to run for office. With the presidential election only 16 months away, mobilizing feminist candidates and voters is a crucial step to ensuring a government that will put women and families first.
Throughout the weekend, chapter delegates and activists will take on hot topics like misogyny in Hollywood and the media, electing a feminist president; women and war; universal healthcare; fair treatment for Arab and Arab-American women; media reform in the wake of the Imus controversy; and the impact of the recent Supreme Court decisions on reproductive rights, pay equity and education. This year's featured speakers include powerful women in politics, pioneers in social reform, and influential media figures.
"Women represent the largest number of registered voters in this country, and we will have an impact in the next election, and any politician who ignores women will be ignored at the ballot box," said NOW President Kim Gandy, who will be speaking on Saturday afternoon. "For the last six years, the Bush administration has trampled on our rights, dragged this country into an unnecessary and deadly war, reshaped the Supreme Court, and governed by its own set of rules. This weekend, we will commit ourselves to changing the face of politics and the course of this nation."
