Kerry Is the Woman's Candidate in 2004
Statement of NOW PAC Chair Kim Gandy

Throughout last night's 90-minute debate, we watched George W. Bush mutter through defensive rhetoric on foreign policy, unable to answer any of Kerry's challenges. While Kerry provided us with his clear plan for the future of this country, Bush whined about the "hard work" he faces every day as President of the United States. Responding to charges about wavering on issues, Kerry asserted that, "It's one thing to be certain, but you can be certain and be wrong." One thing feminists know for certain—George W. Bush is the wrong person to lead our country.

Kerry's substantive and articulate answers are rooted in a firm grasp of issues and his evident desire to lead this country in the right direction. We saw a glimpse of this when Kerry spoke about the diversion of domestic money from important programs like COPS, that protect our children, to Halliburton-engineered projects in Iraq. We are looking forward to hearing directly about issues important to women such as health care, the economy, jobs and reproductive rights at the next debate. We urge Kerry to take this to the next level and tout his strong record on women's issues.

Women must be reminded that living in a safer world means more than sending all of our troops abroad, including the first responders who are our main line of defense against any domestic terrorist attack. It also means that we need jobs that provide a living wage, have health care for ourselves and our children, and pass on to them clean air and water. Of the two candidates, Kerry has fought for us and, I believe, he will help repair the damage done by the current administration.
