NOW Press Office 202-628-8669 Rebecca Farmer, x 116 202-785-8576 (fax) NOW President Kim Gandy to Speak at New York United For Peace Rally February 14, 2003 "George Bush would like you to believe that the country is united for war, but in reality the majority of the world is united for peace," said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy. On February 15, hundreds of thousands of people will converge on New York City to stand with millions around the globe rallying against the White House's plan for war on Iraq. Gandy will speak at the event, joining other notable peace advocates including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Angela Davis, Danny Glover, Harry Belafonte and Susan Sarandon. Organizers expect that this global day of action with events around the world will be one of the largest in history. "NOW opposes the opportunistic use of the 'war on terrorism' as an excuse for attacking Iraq," Gandy said. "The real terrorism is the Bush administration's disregard for international law and destruction of civil liberties at home. This has become an issue of one dictator versus another." "The Bush administration would do well to heed the demands of millions of peace advocates," Gandy said. "If Bush thinks that the Gulf War Part Two will boost his poll numbers and ensure him a win in the 2004 elections, he is sorely mistaken." ###
