Join 51st State NOW For A Birthday Party
June 7 is the anniversary of the Griswold v. Connecticut U.S. Supreme Court decision (1965).
The case involved a Connecticut law that prohibited the use of "any drug, medicinal article or
instrument for the purpose of preventing conception." By a vote of 7-2, the U.S. Supreme Court
invalidated the law on the grounds that it violated the "right to marital privacy." This decision was an
important milestone for women's rights and the right for families, not the church or government, to make
decisions about the number and timing of their children, and established the legal basis for extending
the right to privacy to non-married individuals in 1972.
Birth control is the most commonly used drug among women in the U.S. ages 15-45. Our right to birth
control is something nearly everyone takes for granted. Yet despite widespread use, there are serious
efforts to take away these rights. The American Life League has a campaign called "The Pill Kills"
and dubbed June 7 as "protest the pill day." This organization and other anti-choice groups oppose not
only abortion, but also birth control pills, the IUD, and condoms. They are far outside the mainstream:
in fact, 93% of the U.S. supports access to birth control. Anti-choice extremists have been quietly
working to undermine these rights. This campaign is just the latest of their attacks on women's
rights.
