The National Organization for Women, together with
Global Exchange and the US Women and Cuba Collaboration,
led a delegation from the United States to Venezuela from March 5-16,
2006. Executive Vice President Olga Vives was one of
the leaders who traveled to Venezuela.
The delegates were in Venezuela for the commemoration
of International Women's Day, March 8. NOW leaders and
activists highlighted the struggles that women all over
the world face today and called for steps to advance
the status of women in the United States and abroad.
NOW celebrated International Women's Day with 10 days
of cross-cultural learning with feminist activists and
leaders in Latin America.
The delegation met with Venezuelan women who are working
to end poverty, violence, racism and sexism through
an evolving new social model. The delegates learned
about Venezuelan women's struggles and brought back
stories of their experiences to share with women and
communities in the United States. Olga will share information
and stories from her visit. We will discuss opportunities
to work in solidarity with women around the world. Olga
will also share her vision for how NOW and global activists
can influence United States' trade policies, legislation
and political actions that hurt women and children through
poverty, corruption, hunger and injustice.
