[dc-zaps] Help Us Defeat Alito

Dear Washington Area NOW activist,

We need your help in January!

Hundreds of activists are coming to Washington, DC to defeat Alito. As you know, the Washington Metropolitan Area is frequently the scene of political fights that make the national news, and NOW is often in the middle of them. A huge fight that will affect all our lives ? for a very long time ? is the confirmation hearings for Samuel Alito to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Our clout in this battle can be huge, and we need your help. We have recently launched Enraged and Engaged: Women's Campaign to Defeat Alito working jointly with Feminist Majority Foundation as part of Freedom Winter 2006. NOW activists from around the country will descend on DC to work as field organizers at the NOW headquarters to block the Alito nomination.

You are in a unique position to help. We need you to participate in direct actions and activist mobilization activities Jan. 3-20 ? more details will be coming soon!

We also need help with the following:

Provide housing: Many of our activists are students, but we also have members from around the country who are planning to take time off from their jobs to come. We know we will need places for some of these volunteers to stay ? some for short periods, others for longer. If you can provide a bed, a couch, or floor space, please let us know!

Donate food: If you would like to stop by and drop off bagels, doughnuts, coffee, or fruit ? we would love to meet you! The NOW office is located at 1100 H Street NW 3rd Floor (near Metro Center). Or consider making a cash contribution to help cover the cost of hot cocoa, coffee, poster board, and supplies.

Help run phone banks in the evening: Are you a NOW member who has been down this path before? Perhaps you could come in one or two evenings during January and supervise the phone bank.

Help provide expertise in lobbying: Lobbying will take place daily ? and these folks from out of town are the best people to fill Senate offices. Can you help with lobby briefings?

Evening and weekend campaign help: Do you have a few extra hours to pitch in after work or on the weekends? Come participate in direct actions and mobilization of activists.
