Women will be detrimentally affected by Bush's privatization, plan. Without a Social Security check, most seniors would be poor and senior women would suffer the most. Women are 58% of all Social Security beneficiaries 65 and older. Over 60 million women work in jobs covered by Social Security, which provides an important base for a secure retirement.
Who will pay?
Average income and low-wage workers will pay. If workers became reliant for retirement on private investment accounts in the stock market, there would be no benefit program weighted to help low income workers, particularly women of color.
Young Workers will pay. If younger workers leave Social Security or divert part of their payroll contributions to private accounts, it will rapidly reduce revenues to the Trust Fund and make Social Security's long term solvency much worse. Private accounts will saddle the next generation with trillions of debt.
Women will pay. Because the amount withheld for a woman's retirement benefit will be based on a percentage of her earnings, her contributions would be less throughout her working years because of pay discrimination and time out for care giving obligations.
President Bush will also have the opportunity to appoint as many as three new justices to the Supreme Court, who will make decisions that will affect Social Security, as well as civil rights, privacy, discrimination, reproductive rights, the environment, and the workplace for decades to come.
