A little over a year ago, I was assaulted by a friend and
fellow student at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign. My relationship with the man made things
more complicated...I am a Resident Advisor, and he is a
member of the Hall Council Executive Board. One year later,
after absolutely exhausting every resource I could at the
University, this man still lives in my residence hall.
Although the assualt was not a "rape" per se, I was left
absolutely devastated, and even today live with panic
attacks, depression, and the fact that absolutely nothing
was done.
After six months, I got up the courage to file a police
report about what happened to me (the State's Attorney
wanted to know why I waited so long), and speak to someone
at the University's Office for Student Conflict Resolution.
I was granted a hearing by the judicial committee. My
witnesses included the police officer who took the report
and my therapist. He brought in a few friends who backed
up his bullshit story that he was never in the room with me
(I am , consequently, living in the same room the assault
took place in) and that I had a tendency to "flirt too much"
and make men "uncomfortable" (anyone who knows me would
know that this was a ridiculous accusation).
Five and a half hours later, after 20 minutes of
deliberations (I think it only took 20 minutes because
committee members mentioned in passing that they had plans
for Homecoming weekend and some had tickets to a concert..
i.e, "I hope we're out of here by 8."). They dropped the
charges, and sent us both back to the hall, as though
nothing happened.
That was October 15th. Since then, I have found one other
woman who had a similar experience with the SAME MAN, and
I am still waiting to hear back about whether this is enough
"evidence" to get the decision of the committee appealed.
