Im a mother of 2 children who decided to go back to college for EMT and all was well and I have done well in class with a gpa of 97% but on the day my intern (ride alongs) was to start I was very nerves and wondering how it would go.. unknown it to be it would be a day from hell.
I arrived at the ambulance station at 7 am to begin my day we recieved are first call and I was at that time placed with the manager of the district (only I wasn't aware of who he was at this point) we ran the call and upon returning to the district He asked if I had my seat belt on I said yes sir he told me I was to never call him sir he might be old enough to be my father but never use that word with him again. I stated that I was sorry and i wouoldn't.
We arrived at the district and another student was there with me I spoke with her on what was said and she was like me wondering what was so bad about being called sir out of respect. He came into ther room and told me at this point to get my ass in the rig I was to go to St. Louis with him, I told him we wasn't suppose to do transfers and he told me once again to get in the rig so I did. The other student was like me again wondering why he was rude.
after the patient had be taken to the hospital we preceeded to pick up equipment left at other area hospital. I picked up a backboard and began carring it to the ambulance the whole time wit him asking is that to heavy for you I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself. I told him I was fine so he then talked about my walk and how I had one hell of a walk but not much of a face to look at.. He then had the nerve to ask if I had overheard this I told him no thinking I should just be quiet and let it go.
He continued on with his remarks of women are very book smart but have no common sense so they make really bad Medic's and how he had 2 feamles on his job in another area but he fired 1 of them because she crossed him and that she never worked in the field again. He then went on to discuss the men on his district and named some of the ones he intended on firing as soon as they messed up and he could do it wtih out getting in trouble. Then he went back to the female issues and that he didnt think they should be anything but bare foot and pregant and taking care of the household etc.
He asked why I decided to go into this field I told him it was because I have wanted to do so for yearsand that since my children was now in school it was a good time for me to do it. He in return told me I better make Damn sure this is what I wanted to do but that he would advise me against it and that if I repeated any of the conversations that happened that day that he would make damn sure I would never work in EMS.
Ive neve met a man like him before I now call him cave man because that is the syndrom this man has and dispite his threat I tool it to the college and it now lays in the hands of the district board but nothing has been done nor do I expect for anything to be done with it. But since this has happened many things has happened to me as far as my college I am now only allowed to do my ride time during certain days and times and my grade point average is dropping for no reason. I feel lost and unable to do anything more because Im not sure what I can do, but I do know one thing this man will not run me out of my education like he is trying I will have to find some way to fight him back and I would like to know how to do that.
Thanks for listening
