BROKEN PROMISES & AGE DISCRIMINATION
I worked for LBR, a vice president, for 9 years. He promised me the position of Executive Secretary...if I gave up my overtime for one year. I gave up the overtime but did not receive the promotion. LBR gave me excuses (1st year) your not ready yet (2nd year) wait one more year, and the(3rd year) he told me I misunderstood him.
I had all the responsibilities and work, the business cards, etc. of an Executive Secretary, but not the pay or official title. LBR frequently encouraged other VP's and Managers to call me Executive Secretary. My review was marked above average, excellent and outstanding, but LBR transferred me to another department because he said I was forgetting things.
The phone number I had for all those years was taken from me and given to my young replacement.
I was so embarrassed and humiliated by his action that I left the company and filed a complaint with the Human Resources's home office in PA. I won. I received back pay for one year's salary and my official records were changed to Executive Secretary for the last year I worked for LBR.
But did I really win? I am 56 and have not been able to find a job for 11 months. The only place willing to take me is a temporary agency.
