Age & Gender (not orientation) Descrimination

I was hired by a very large supermarket chain in the Midwest. I was
to work in the Produce/Salad Bar Department. I am the oldest person in the
department...the Produce Manager is about four years younger. I have the most
physically demanding job of all the women in the department. I make fresh
juice from cases of citrus. The new store opened the first part of October,'97
and it was quickly obvious that the rest of the women...under 25 years...were
not dependable. They called in sick often...most of the time from hangovers.
I was not to complain about this to the managers but just pick up the extra work.
One of these women (20 yo) was suspended for one week for her absence and my
supervisor began giving me the worst hours she could. She began giving me back-to-back
shifts. One day I would work two o'clock in the afternoon to ten o'clock at night.
The next day, I was expected to "open" the salad bar at six o'clock in the morning
and work until three o'clock in the afternoon. The next day would begin with the
afternoon shift followed by a morning shift. I have had complaints from my
supervisor because the only time I have requested "off" is for church services on
Saturday afternoon. These shifts mean that I work 17 hours out of a 24 hour period
and it is all legal because it spans two calendar days. Administration stands by my supervisor. The "Good Ole Boy" network isn't comprised of only men! Some young women do not know what we have done for them in the past....
