story: This past year in the work environment, I've noticed some of the most blatantly
discriminatory practices yet. I was recently employed through the May Agency department
stores whereas I was working part time while attending Indiana University. I
had gotten hired in as a part time employee in women's apparel, men's collections and
when I transferred to the Fort Wayne, Indiana area, in coats/apparrel.
I had several times been given recommendations of performance that awarded different
levels of excellence in retail sales. I later requested a transfer back to the Bloomington
area to enroll in classes again at Indiana University. I was told that there
weren't aren't available positions, I knew that to be false because being in a college
area, the turn over rate was pretty big. I pursued this transfer for several months.
Eventually, I told the scheduling manager that I would even settle for a flyer position,
whereas I would be able to pick up any hours that were available from other employees.
I was even denied that. It was when I requested to transfer to another state, whereas
the May Agency has department stores all across the country, that I was told by the store
manager, that he would have to contact
the Glenbrook mall store where I was last transferred to, to check and see if
he could approve such a inquiry, since I was last employeed at that store (#36).
Granted I had already had a problem receiving my last paycheck prior to my request
for transfer back to store #26 where I was originally hired on at. It took more than
four weeks to receive my last paycheck, which turned out to be a 0 amount check.
Prior to receiving this check I was told I had two checks coming via US postal mail
that should amount to $113.00. Now how does two checks amounting $113.00 reduce to
one check amounting to $.00 ? Prior to these incidents while I was employed at store #26,
I had requested a job description transfer, from retail clothing sales to retail cosmetics,
well, according to the cosmetics manager, there wasn't too much of a problem, because
training would be provided. Well, the Human Resources manager denied my
request, not once, but several times I was pasted over, she even hired someone outside
the sales team that was already in existence, the last of which she made sure I was
working during the scheduled interview, and she had them exit the store through my department.
Well, is it because I am an African American woman? No, I guess not because combat any
complaimts she waited until I transferred to store #36 and hired an associate of whom I
knew and was hired in pretty much at the same time. Then I thought it had something to
do with a civil complaint I was involved in, but what should that have to do with my employer? Discrimination? I think so.
