I am a public school teacher in an insular community. The district is small, consisting of only a single school. When I arrived here ten years ago I
thought all this women's movement stuff was nothing more than grumblings from a group
of females simply dissatisfied with theirlives. A decade later I know now that discrimination
in the work place is VERY REAL, VERY DEMEANING and VERY FRUSTRATING! What makes matters worse is that it is
blatant and allowed to continue inspite of independent complaints from several women. Here
are some examples of what happens on our campus;
- A woman successfully sues a male employee for sexual harassment. The school's action;
He was promoted to supervisor of her department.
- A teacher describing an event involving his class (they were all females)states that
"the girls did all the work".An administrator remarks in a loud voice "Well isn't that
how it's supposed to be?" Then laughs. This was at a committee meeting in which all the other
participants except the teacher in the discussion and the administrator mentioned were women.
- same adminstrator cracks jokes about a classified employee who went back to her maiden name after a painful divorce at social gathering.
- A teacher was recently promoted to a management position. The man had a history of confrontations
involving the parents of female students and complaints about sexist comments. While the position required no special
training, the women candidate held a masters in public school adminstration. The male candidate hasn't seen the inside of a
college classroom since he earned his master (in a non education/administrative field some 10 -15 years ago.
To make matters worse, he was given the appropriate perparation periods off for the coming school year prior to interviewing for the position.
Does all of this sound too unreal? I wish it was.
