We need your help! Federal funding for battered women's shelters could be doubled when the House Appropiations Committee meets during the week of April 28th. You can help assure that committee members vote for this key amendment increasing funding by $72.8 million. The proposal is sponsored by long-time domestic violence program advocate, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY).
As you are aware, most shelters are filled to capacity and some have long waiting lists. Doubling federal funding will mean that many more women and children fleeing domestic violence be able to find safe shelter. Many homeless women and children are fleeing from domestic violence situations. Because three to four million American women are battered each year by their husbands or partners, the demand for shelter space is great.
Please contact immediately any of the Representatives -- all House Appropriations Committee members -- listed below and let them know the importance of this increase in shelter funding. Even if a listed member is not from your district, please call, write, e-mail, and fax your message of strong support to as many committee member as you are able. This funding can save lives.
The committee vote will be held at any time after Monday, April 28th.
