Promise Keepers Mobilization Project

ACTION PLANS AND IDEAS

General Actions

1. Follow the media tips. Make sure the Promise Keepers media coverage includes a feminist perspective. Plan editorial meetings with newspapers, TV stations and local radio stations.

2. Add a Promise Keeper focus to an action in progress. Have a PK speak out at your Take Back the Night March or your Women-Friendly Workplace pickets. Discuss the Promise Keepers agenda as a part of your Domestic Violence Awareness Month Programs

3. Organize a letter writing campaign to the editor of your local newspapers.

4. Coordinate a press conference with other organizations in your city. Reach out to other feminist groups, people of color organizations, pro-choice activists, domestic violence shelters, lesbian/gay groups and progressive communities of faith.

5. Expose the Promise Keepers in your community. Have a letter writing campaign to the pastors of the churches in which they are meeting. Ask these churches or community centers to reject the patriarchal and homophobic principles of the Promise Keepers .

6. Stage a counter-protest in front of the stadiums where they gather or at other symbolic places in your community.

Field Actions for October 4

1. Have a small demonstration to memorialize what is going on in Washington. Send a message such as "As the Promise Keepers gather in Washington, we gather on the capitol steps (or town square etc.) to let our community know that we will not surrender".

2. Organize an event to celebrate National Coming Out Day on October 11th. As the Promise Keepers come together in Washington to condemn Lesbians and Gays-- we are fighting for equal rights for all.

3. Go out in your community and ask people to support you as you "Refuse to Surrender". Have a speakout about the real mission of the Promise Keepers and the need for tolerance.

4. Create a task force in your chapter -- on the Radical Right, Lesbian Rights or Abortion Rights -- and as their first act have them organize an October 4 event.

5. Organize people to call in on your local talk radio shows, giving them a feminist perspective of the October 4 Rally in Washington, DC and on PK's agenda

6. Plan to send a sign to Washington, DC to show your support to the activists who will be demonstrating against the Promise Keepers. Slogans like "Women Refuse to Submit" and ask people to donate $1.00 to sign it.

7. Encourage your chapter members and other activists to call your members of Congress and the White House to send a message that politicians who support women's rights should not take part in the Oct. 4th Rally

8. Pledge a Promise Keeper. Ask people to pledge a penny per person at a Promise Keeper rally or pledge a dollar for every 10 people or every 100.

9. Organize a "Refuse to Surrender Campaign". Ask people to pledge a certain amount for every hour you "stand against intolerance." Or pledge a certain amount for every hour a NOW activist (either from that area or from your chapter) is willing to spend on the National Mall on October 4 to remind PK that women will not surrender.
