NOW President to Discuss Motherhood Issues on Good Morning America
Update: The segment featuring NOW President Kim Gandy aired on Good Morning America on Friday, March 31, 8-8:30am.
On March 8, NOW sent a letter to Good Morning America anchor Diane Sawyer and the show's executive producer, protesting their two-part series on the "Mommy Wars" that pitted stay-at-home moms against mothers who work outside the home. This provocative piece had little substance and even fewer solutions.
NOW asked our supporters and others concerned about mothers' and caregivers' issues to write to ABC, urging them to do a "real" series on the economic and childrearing challenges facing today's parents.
Thousands of you did just that, and we can't thank you enough.
NOW is happy to report that your messages got through and Sawyer and her producers took notice. Next week, NOW President Kim Gandy is scheduled to appear on Good Morning America, joining a group of mothers to discuss the complex issues they face both at home and in the paid workforce. Also appearing on the show is Laurie Pettine, chair of NOW's Mothers and Caregivers Economic Rights ad hoc Advisory Committee. The interviews were taped earlier and, unfortunately, we won't know how Good Morning America chooses to edit the footage until the segment airs.
We encourage all NOW supporters and friends to watch this feature and judge for yourselves if Good Morning America does justice to mothers' issues this time around, or if it's just more of the same old thing—pitting one group of hardworking women against another. We're guardedly optimistic!
