Ms. Magazine Celebrates 35 Years
10/25/07
NOW is excited to be a part of Ms. Magazine's 35th anniversary issue -- a remarkable milestone in a world where most magazines don't even last five years. NOW President Kim Gandy is quoted alongside Gloria Steinem, Margaret Cho, Alice Walker, Whoopi Goldberg, Beth Ditto, Billie Jean King, Isabel Allende, Wangari Maathai, bell hooks and others, in a feature called "Voices Carry."
Each woman responded to the question of how feminism (or Ms.) has impacted her life in the past 35 years, or where she foresees the movement going in the next 35. As part of this anniversary issue, there's also an eye-opening "Then & Now" comparison of women's lives and achievements in 1972 compared with today.
Look for it at bookstores and newsstands; if you don't see it, take a minute to ask management to carry it. You can also subscribe to Ms. and have each new issue sent right to your door.
This issue of Ms. looks back on the triumphs of Title IX in both K-12 and higher education, as that gender-barrier-breaking law also celebrates its 35th birthday this year. Other articles of note in the new issue include a profile of a "recovering politician," former Senator and Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun, and her new venture into "biodynamic" foods; an excerpt from a new book about Bella Abzug; a look at how feminists have impacted mainstream news media from within and without; an expose of how sex traffickers may hide behind classified ads, featuring NOW's New York City chapter; and a true story from an abortion-providing physician about how she told her grandmother about her work—and the heart-wrenching secret that "Flower Grandma" revealed in return. Don't miss it!
