In 1999, Kim Gandy, then NOW's executive vice president, presented Lyon and Martin with Women of Courage Awards at NOW's Lesbian Rights Summit.

Longtime NOW members Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon have been leading feminists and lesbian activists since they founded the first lesbian organization in the 1950s. Together they wrote Lesbian/Woman, and Del wrote the groundbreaking book Battered Wives, among many accomplishments.

We all owe a great deal to these pioneers, and were delighted to see San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom honor them with the very first legal marriage of a same-sex couple in California.

Join us in sending congratulations and thanks to Del and Phyllis -- congratulations on their long-awaited legal marriage, after 55 years as partners, and thanks for many years of dedicated feminist activism and leadership.
