SAVE THE SUPREME COURT — SAVE WOMEN'S LIVES
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
In taking any of these actions, remember to emphasize that you are a women's rights supporter, and that women's rights, especially reproductive rights, must be considered in the search for each new Justice!
- Send an urgent email to your senators.
- Follow up your email with a phone call to your senators' in-state offices and ask to speak with the staff person who handles Supreme Court nominations. If you're unsure of what to say, you can read them parts of the email text. Let the staff person know in no uncertain terms that constituents will be watching them during the process of questioning and confirming a new Supreme Court justice, and we expect the senator to do her/his job and not just be a "rubber stamp."
- Download and print the flyer that is posted on NOW's web site. Post it on every bulletin board you pass; put one under the windshield wiper of every car when you go to church or the supermarket. Keep some in your purse or bag and hand them out.
- Write and send a handwritten note to your senator's home office in your state (mail can be sent to the senators' district offices, but not to their Capitol Hill office because of anthrax concerns). All the contact information you need can be found through NOW's web site.
- Bring a friend or two along, and drop by your senator's in-state district office to let the staff there know how important this is to you.
- Write a letter to the editor of your local paper. You can find the listings of your local media outlets through NOW's web site.
- If you like to write, write a whole op-ed and send it to every newspaper in your area - and share it with us by sending it to now@now.org! If you've written two, get a friend to sign one and send it out as well.
- Talk to the media! Call up your local newspaper and suggest they write a story on this issue. Make it easy for them to write a story by offering quotes and contact info for other local people they can interview.
- Listen to talk radio and call in to raise an issue you care about. For instance, you could call and say: "I'm concerned that Sandra Day O'Connor will be replaced by someone who does not support equal educational opportunities for girls - after all, she was the deciding vote on the most recent Title IX case." A list of recent cases where O'Connor was the deciding vote is available on NOW's web site and other 5-4 Supreme Court decisions that could change with two new nominees are at available at Supreme Court Watch.
- Send a personally written email to 10 (or more!) of your friends and family members to let them know why this issue matters to you, and why it should matter to them. Copy and paste into the email this list of possible actions for them!
- Attend a rally or action in your area put on by your local NOW chapter or one of our allied groups! You can get in touch with your local chapter by looking it up online or checking the listing in your local phone book.
- If there is no action or rally being planned in your area, plan one yourself! Get together a group to help you plan and publicize the rally, choose a site (a federal building is a good rally site, such as a federal court building or a post office), and of course tell the media that you're rallying! Find contact info for your local paper and other media outlets through NOW's web site. When planning an action or rally, consider whether it could be a regular activity, such as a rally on the first Friday of every month at the courthouse or post office until the confirmation process is over.
- Start a NOW chapter in your area if there isn't one listed - contact us at chapters@now.org for all the info; we'll send you materials and help you!
- Send us your ideas for more ways to get the word out and get people involved! Email us at now@now.org
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO WOMEN'S RIGHTS!
