CALL TO ACTION ON IMPEACHMENT EFFORT:
We need your help again! The House has become a three-ring circus,
but the clowns aren't funny and the new ringmaster says he's not in charge
yet. It is time to bring the House Judiciary Committee's sideshow to a
close.
Please call your Representative
-- before the impeachment vote on Thursday -- to say that you are opposed
to impeachment. That the President's behavior, offensive as it was,
simply does not rise to the level of an impeachable offense. And
that the House majority's partisan game of chicken is jeopardizing the
country's future.
Urge that Congress focus on important issues like protecting reproductive
freedom, expanding the scope of hate crimes legislation, improving Social
Security and Medicare, passing equal pay initiatives, and funding programs
to stop violence against women.
The only way to stop the impeachment of the President is for us to flood
Congressmembers with calls, faxes, telegrams and emails. There is
a target list, but we urge you to contact your Member
with this message even if she or he is not on the target list -- every
vote counts.
You can try the Congressional Switchboard at 202-225-3121 but it has
been flooded all day. A better approach would be to call your Congressmember's
home district office or or send him or her an email appeal.
You can locate the email address at http://www.congress.org
If you're in the Washington, D.C. area, or know someone who is, there
will be a vigil this Thursday, December 17, from 10 am to 2 pm, on the
West Side of the U.S. Capitol. Please join us!
SHOPPING FOR A BETTER WORLD:
We've just posted hundreds of new items on our online
catalog, buttons, bumper stickers, and lots of gift ideas, just in
time for the holidays. Wearing your concerns on your sleeve (or your
lapel, or your bumper) is an action you can take every day. And buying
works of art by feminist artists (stained glass, clay, pewter, more) helps
to support these artists while the proceeds to NOW help to fund our grassroots
organizing agenda.
Take a special look at the new (are you sitting down? . . . ) NOW cookbook!
But this is not your ordinary recipe book. In addition to
great recipes, there are fascinating photos, awe-inspiring quotes, funny
lines from feminist comics, inspiring stories from our history, even a
cartoon . . . you'll want to keep turning the pages even if
you have no intention of cooking! And it's an "action gift" -- it
will entertain the activist with great stories (and memories) while introducing
a non-activist to our movement and NOW's accomplishments in an entertaining
way. It's a beautiful 192-page hardback book, and a great conversation
piece for your coffee table at only $18.95 -- and all of the profits go
directly to NOW action programs. Check it out at http://www.now.org/nnt/fall-98/dontcook.html
DC VIGIL
Please join us on the West Side of the U. S. Capitol this Thursday,
December 17, from 10 am to 2 pm, to send a strong message to the majority
leadership in the House. There will be participants from a broad
coalition of organizations, including civil rights, labor and women's rights.
TARGET LIST
Even if your member's name does not appear on the following list, please
contact your representative. This includes contacting both Republicans
and Democrats and those members who may have previously announced their
position on the impeachment question. They can always change their minds.
Members who have said that they will vote against impeachment need reinforcement.
Please share this message with friends, neighbors and co-workers.
Congress must hear that the majority of the public opposes a vote to impeach
President Clinton.
But it will be especially important for activists to contact House members
who undecided or Republicans who have moderate voting records. These
members (all Republicans) are listed as follows:
