Congratulate Obama & Biden
Tell Them Your Ideas for a Feminist Administration NOW!
We did it! Women turned out in record numbers and we elected Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. Obama and his running mate Joe Biden have been entrusted with bringing change to this country during a time of crisis and Bush-induced cynicism.
After all the dancing in the streets: What next?
President-elect Obama wants you to share with him YOUR vision for where he should lead this nation. NOW is pleased that the Obama-Biden team is seeking input from everyone who stands to win or lose from the actions of this administration.
So, Speak Up NOW. Send your message to the Obama-Biden team and tell them:
- Congratulations! Way to go! I'm so proud of your history-making victory.
- I support NOW's call for an Obama cabinet and administration that reflects our country in all its diversity.
- Here are the issues at the top of MY agenda for your administration (add your own).
Below we offer sample text to give you some ideas for your message. Just remember that your own thoughts, especially if you have a story or an example, will be more attention-grabbing and personal.
Now is not the time to sit back and relax. President-elect Obama asks "Where should we start together?" Speak out and tell him! Make the 44th presidential administration your own, beginning Right NOW!
Send a message to Obama-Biden and their transition team:
You can copy and paste as much of the following text as you like into the box that says "Tell us your vision for the country" -- please remember to add your own thoughts and ideas to personalize your message.
Congratulations! I'm so proud of your history-making victory.
In addition to supporting NOW's call for an Obama cabinet and administration that reflects the diversity of our country, here are the issues at the top of MY agenda for what I hope proves to be the most feminist, progressive administration ever to lead our country:
- As you plan for the economic recovery of this nation, please keep in mind that women are disproportionately affected due to wage disparity and their segregation into lower paying occupations and jobs. You can help lessen the impact and speed up women's recovery by supporting strong equal pay enforcement laws and helping to close the wage gap.
- Juggling work and family responsibilities is a significant challenge for women. I ask you to expand family leave to cover all workers and put the issue of paid leave back on the national agenda, in addition to a minimum number of paid sick days for all workers.
- Repair the shredded social safety net, and give women a clear path to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
- Every woman, man and child in the U.S. deserves to have access to quality health care. We need to achieve universal healthcare and it must include coverage for the full range of reproductive health services.
- Protect and advance women's reproductive rights, starting with: repeal the Global Gag Rule, restore and increase international family planning funds, and halt the taxpayer giveaway to ineffective, dangerous abstinence-only sex education programs.
- As for the U.S. Supreme Court, I am counting on you to appoint justices who recognize and respect women's rights.
- Develop an effective Title IX equal education enforcement system for every level of education.
- Guarantee basic human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and strengthen laws banning discrimination based on race, color, gender, age or disability.
- Include crimes based on gender, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity as hate crimes under federal law and mandate that law enforcement collect and report data on such crimes.
- Advocate for a guarantee of gender equality in the U.S. Constitution. Push forward on the ratification of CEDAW, the United Nations treaty to end sex discrimination.
- Continue your leadership on ending violence against women and girls here and around the globe, including making VAWA enforcement and increased funding a priority.
- Please honor your campaign promise to end the war in Iraq and begin bringing our troops home as soon as possible. Ensure that the Veteran's Administration has the capacity and expertise to assist the significant numbers of returning wounded, and address the special needs of military women.
I know you can do it! Congratulations again, and I look forward to this positive, transformative journey.
