Toxic Platinum, Sick Children: NOW Wants Halt To Implant Approval
November 17, 2006
Responding to rumors that the Food and Drug Administration will soon issue final approval to market silicone-gel breast implants, NOW called upon members of Congress to halt the process until hearings and more research can be conducted. In a letter (pdf) to representatives in the House and Senate, NOW President Kim Gandy noted that alarming deformities and serious, but rare, illnesses have been found in children born to women with implants.
A possible culprit could be a toxic form of platinum found in breast implants that is known to be harmful to humans. Recent whistleblower disclosures about platinum in implants and falsified data, plus an FDA report on deformities and illnesses in children born to women with silicone implants have heightened safety concerns. The FDA, under great pressure from implant makers, has refused to undertake further research or query implant makers about fraudulent data.
