NOW Board, Officers and Action Center Staff Walk to Support Women's Cancer Research

May 2, 2006

Walk for Women's Lives

On Sunday, April 23, the NOW National Board and Action Center staff and officers joined the Feminist Majority Foundation in the First National Walk for Women's Lives to support research on ovarian and uterine cancer. The walk was a great success! NOW joined with more than 200 other activists in the 5K walk beginning at the Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. The money raised will be used to support research into the potential use of mifepristone to treat progesterone receptor positive uterine and ovarian cancers.

NOW is proud to support the Feminist Majority Foundation in efforts to call for clinical trials for patients with progesterone-dependent ovarian and uterine cancer. This effort is supported by a team of prestigious clinical researchers, attorneys, and FDA specialists who are moving ahead with Phase II clinical trials.

This is the first time in history that a women's organization has sponsored clinical trials. Feminist Majority President Ellie Smeal said, "We know women can't wait any longer. It's been nearly two decades since mifepristone—tied up with the abortion debate—was discovered. When all else fails, feminists can and will make women's health research move forward."
