NOW'S PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
A Feminist Issue That Knows No Borders
- NOW held a press conference with ally organizations in El Paso, Texas on Dec. 3, 2005 to announce this campaign and to raise visibility in the U.S. of the killings along the border between El Paso and Juarez, Mexico
- Raise awareness along the border state of the nearly 400 murders of women
in Juarez, Mexico
- Raise consciousness in the United States that the kidnappings and murders
of women in the city of Juarez and Chihuahua are a transnational problem
- Advocate for creation of a bi-national committee to address gender violence
- Promote the congressional resolutions sponsored by Rep. Hilda Solis (D-Calif.) and Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) condemning the murders of nearly 400 young women in Juarez.
- Demand that the maquiladoras’owners assume more responsibility
for the safety of their workers and to work to ensure safety by providing
safe transportation, streetlights and increased security measures. Demanding
a new trade agenda that forces all U.S.-owned and Mexican owned companies
that do business in the U.S. to treat workers with respect and dignity
- Demand that the administrations of Presidents Vicente Fox and George
W. Bush intervene in the investigations and clean up local corruption and
punish those responsible
- Reach out to immigrant, farm-worker organizations and global justice
groups in Latina/o communities to increase NOW's racial justice work
and increase collaboration with Latinas in general in the USA and U.S.'s
territories.
