FACT SHEET

PURPOSE: To show the nation and the world that supporters of women's rights are the overwhelming majority. Thousands will rally to send an unmistakable message: We will not rest until justice is ours. We demand an end to poverty and violence against women as we march into the new millennium. And, we will take the power by electing a Congress and a president who will join feminists in our struggle for equality.

Mission Statement, US Organizing Committee:
We unite with women around the world to demand that leaders of the United States, the United Nations and its member States, and other institutions of power work to:

• Eliminate poverty and ensure a fair distribution of the planet's wealth between rich and poor and between men and women;
• Eliminate violence against women; and
• Ensure equality between women and men.

ASSEMBLE: 11 AM on the Ellipse (Constitution Ave. between 15th & 17th Sts., NW)

STEP-OFF:  12 Noon

RALLY:   1:00 to 4:00 PM on the Ellipse (Constitution Ave. between 15th & 17th Sts., NW)

DELEGATIONS: Any group having 20 or more participants may be classified as a delegation. Two members of this delegation should be designated as facilitators. All delegations must register to be listed in march materials. Individual participants are also encouraged to attend!

SPECIAL NEEDS: Special seating will be available for people with disabilities. The WORLD MARCH of WOMEN 2000 program will be signed for the hearing impaired, and the March route is wheelchair accessible. Transportation will be provided for those who cannot negotiate the route. WORLDWIDE EVENTS

Women from over 145 countries are organizing world march events.  Worldwide events begin on International Women's Day (March 8, 2000) and will culminate on Oct. 17, the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, when women representing every participating country will meet at the U.N. in New York City to demand improved programs to eradicate poverty and violence against women.  The Quebec Federation of Women (Fédération des femmes du Québec, www.ffq.qc.ca/marche2000/en/) conceptualized the global events and is coordinating the U.N. event.

RELIGIOUS SERVICE TO END POVERTY & STOP VIOLENCE -- October 15, 2000

People of diverse religious backgrounds will come together for a very special observance on Sunday morning. ?The program will begin at 10 AM in Lafayette Park.  (Across the street from the White House.)

WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM on HEALTH-- October 14-16, 2000

The Women's International Symposium on Health will bring together feminists from around the world to address the serious health issues women face everywhere. Participants will have the opportunity to network with health care professionals, to educate themselves on women's health problems and to develop strategies to improve women's health.

VIRTUAL MARCH -- October 17, 2000

The Virtual March will be held in conjunction with the World March of Women 2000. The Virtual March will give activists around the globe the opportunity to show their support for women's rights.
