On Feb. 23, NOW urged feminist activists to ask their senators to confirm longtime friend of women's rights and workplace equality, Hilda Solis, as Secretary of Labor. Solis was soon confirmed.
NOW Urges Nomination of Sen. Debbie Stabenow as Secretary of HHS
With the withdrawal of Sen. Tom Daschle from consideration, NOW urged President Obama to nominate another strong and consistent advocate for universal health care to the position of HHS Secretary, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.).
Urge Senators to Confirm Eric Holder as Attorney General
On Jan. 22, NOW urged women's rights supporters in key states to send a message to their Senators that Mr. Holder's confirmation should be approved. Holder was later confirmed.

Goodyear Tire Gets Away with Pay Discrimination, But Lilly Ledbetter Wins the Day
On Jan. 22, the Senate passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act by a bipartisan vote of 61 to 36, vindicating Ledbetter's long search for redress after 19 years of pay discrimination. "This is an important first step in our efforts to undo years of backsliding on the right to be paid a fair and equitable wage," said NOW President Kim Gandy. NOW Calls on Obama Administration, Congress to Undo Harmful HHS Rule
On Dec. 19, NOW released a statement calling on President-elect Obama to undo a new HHS "conscience" rule issued in the final days of the Bush administration. This harmful regulation requires any health care entity receiving federal funds to certify hat none of its employees are required to assist in any way with any medical services they find objectionable. The Obama administration has since indicated it will rescind the regulation.
