Code Red: Protest the Bush Agenda August 6, 2004 Protesting the Bush Administration's efforts to dismantle and undermine women's rights, NOW-NYC is organizing a mass demonstration to be held in NYC's Central Park from 7-9PM on Sept.1 during the Republican National Convention. NOW-NYC President Rita Haley said, "While distortions and misrepresentations of the Administration's record are told at Madison Square Garden and the public is told that 'W is for Women,' we'll be telling the truth about the Administration's assault on women's rights, including reproductive freedom, and the other civil rights we've fought so hard to gain." "And while the Administration tries to wrap itself in the flag of patriotism, who better than those of us who live in and love New York City to tell the truth about the broken promises and lack of security in the wake of 9/11," continued Haley. Protest organizers intend to tell the truth about the Bush agenda in speech and song, addressing issues important to women and young people who will determine the outcome of the 2004 elections. The Bush records has been labeled a war on women, people of color, workers, LGBT, disabled, poor and immigrant peoples, the environment and our very Bill of Rights. Since New York City is one of the world's media centers, protest organizers hope that the protest message will reach potential voters across the nation. NOW-NYC members were excited to learn that National NOW President Kim Gandy will speak at the demonstration. Wanting the event to be fun despite its serious nature, demonstration organizers are asking "Billionaires for Bush" to participate. Having some other entertaining ideas tucked up their sleeves, protest organizers recommend checking the NOW-NYC website regularly for updates. NOW-NYC invites all supporters of women's rights and other progressive issues to attend the demonstration to be held during the Republican National Convention, on Sept. 1, from 7-9 PM in the East Meadow of Central Park. The NYPD has stipulated that protestors enter the park at 90th Street and Fifth Avenue. |
