![]() A Community Dialogue on Please join national and local policy experts, activists, and NOW National Board members to discuss the importance of Social Security in the economic lives of women and families. Working together, we can save, strengthen, and improve our only guaranteed social insurance program. Thursday, June 30
5-6:30 pm Loews Vanderbilt Hotel 2100 West End Ave, Nashville Room: Symphony II Barbara Kennelly, former Member of Congress and current President of the
National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare What lies in store for women if the right-wing succeeds in converting Social Security to a system of private accounts? How will our retirement be affected by this or any other changes being proposed? Should we have to work until age 69 or see our monthly retirement check reduced by 45 percent or more? Ever wonder why there's no credit given for caregivers? And, why are we having this conversation when a Medicare financing crisis is more imminent? Our featured speaker, Barbara Kennelly, served seven terms representing Connecticut in the U.S. Congress and was the first woman Deputy Majority Whip. She was the first woman to serve on the key House Ways and Means Committee, overseeing Social Security, taxes and finance. During the Clinton administration, she served as counsel and spokesperson for the Social Security Administration. She recently became Chair of the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations, a national coalition of 53 senior advocacy groups. NOW President Kim Gandy and NOW Action Vice President Olga Vives will join Kennelly to jump start the discussion about the impact of Social Security changes on women. Mary Liz Knish, communications director of the Tennessee chapter of AARP, will also join in this important dialogue on how to preserve the disability and survivor benefits, and also how the system can be strengthened to enhance women's economic security in our later years. Please join Nashville community activists and the NOW board as we promote strengthening Social Security and oppose private investment accounts that would drain the funding and risk women's economic security. The 2005 National NOW Conference will be held at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel July 1 through 3. Interested activists are welcome to join us. On-site registration is available.
