Rainbow/PUSH Conference Focuses on Progressive Vote July 1, 2004 This week's Rainbow/PUSH Conference, which concluded today in Chicago, highlighted the importance of mobilizing progressive votes and making sure they are cast and counted in November. NOW President Kim Gandy spoke at a high-powered Leadership Summit, addressing the gender gap and the importance of registering and turning out our base vote in this election. Participants in the Leadership Summit also included presidential candidates Howard Dean, John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich, Congresswomen Barbara Lee, Maxine Waters, and Corinne Brown, Congressmen Jesse Jackson, Jr. and John Conyers, and Greg Palast, author of The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. said, "You know, the White House is public housing and we plan to remove George W. Bush from the public housing rolls in November. This Leadership Summit is an opportunity for those of us who are committed to that goal to come together, to share our resources and strengths, with the clear goal of reaching a better understanding of how we will go about sending George W. Bush back to Texas." NOW Foundation is launching projects to register and mobilize women voters in several states where women are under-represented, with a focus on registering women of color, and NOW's new online voter education and registration campaign, 10forChange.org, aims to register thousands more through the internet and friend-to-friend. “There is an overwhelming need for the voices of women and people of color to be heard in this election - and it is up to all of us to make sure that happens,” said Gandy.
