NOW activists are encouraged to join in the Tuesday, December 9th, observance of the 40th anniversary of the creation of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. The focus of the event will be to urge Senate confirmation of President Clinton's nominee to head that division, NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund Western Regional Director Bill Lann Lee. As noted in the last NOW Legislative Update, Republican leadership in the Senate has refused to let the Judiciary Committee vote on Lee's confirmation. Civil rights activists want to put pressure on members of the Senate to allow a vote on this eminently qualified candidate.
