Reproductive Freedom Summer 2006: Providing a Peaceful Presence

Keep the only clinic in Mississippi OPEN -- Join NOW activists during the week of July 15-22, 2006 in Jackson

For information and updates on events in Jackson, Miss., call the hotline at 601-927-0598.

June 23, 2006

This summer, Operation Save America, formerly known as Operation Rescue, is planning a siege of the last remaining abortion clinic in Mississippi. Their goal is to close the Jackson clinic, thereby ending reproductive freedom for women in the state of Mississippi, and getting closer to their ultimate goal of ending reproductive freedom for all women. They tell their zealots it will "be the first domino to be tipped signaling the end of abortion in all fifty states." They intend on "storming the gates of hell" (Jackson's lone clinic), calling abortion a deadlier foe than Hurricane Katrina.

Operation Save America has similarly besieged other abortion clinics in locations such as Boulder, Colo.; Columbus, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; and Dallas, Texas; harassing doctors who perform abortions and attempting to intimidate the patients.

We Invite NOW Activists to Join Us & to Help

Join Mississippi NOW and Jackson Area NOW activists for a week of activities to counter the hostile attacks from Operation Save America. Taking a page out of the Karl Rove playbook, Operation Rescue re-labeled themselves Operation Save America to make it sound like they are intent on doing good things to "save America". NOW activists have, in turn, more appropriately re-named the organization "Operation Oppress America".

The battle for reproductive freedom is a human rights struggle for equality and social justice. Year after year anti-abortion zealots travel across the country terrorizing clinics, staff, and patients. This summer, activists are gathering Jackson for Reproductive Freedom Summer 2006: Providing a Peaceful Presence to support access to reproductive health care for the women and girls in Mississippi.

Take part in any of these planned activities, including:

  • Join activists at a kick-off rally w/high profile speakers,
  • Participate in a march on the state capital to demand protection for women and girls,
