Reproductive Rights Endangered!
Anti-abortion advocates in Congress are urging President Clinton to
eliminate international family planning funds (commonly referred to as
the Mexico City policy). Republicans are unwilling to approve payment
of dues to the United Nations unless President Clinton caves on this issue
which would result in the U.S. losing its voting seat in the United Nations.
Despite Clinton’s long standing support of international family planning
funds, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is reported to have recommended
that Clinton cave to the Republican demands.
If passed, huge funding restrictions are estimated to lead to an additional
4 million unplanned pregnancies, up to 2 million unplanned births, 134,000
infant deaths, 8,000 deaths among women in childbirth and pregnancy, and
1.6 million abortions.
A back-door compromise is expected this weekend. Please call President

. Urge them not to restrict international family planning.
