Search Tips for the NOW web sites
To search, just enter a word or phrase in the search box.
You can use the Boolean operators and, or, or not in searching. Without these Boolean operators, the tool will assume you're looking for all of the words (an and search). The operators are not case sensitive. To narrow or broaden your search, here are some more tips:
Narrowing Your Search:
- Using NOT will limit your search if you initially find too many documents. Typing in reproductive NOT abortion will limit your search to articles about reproductive rights that don't mention abortion at all.
- You can search for phrases by just typing them in, such as violence against women. If this turns up too many documents, do a new search with double quotes around your phrase, ie, "violence against women".
- You can also narrow your search by checking the appropriate button next to "Limit Search To". You can limit your search to find words in the file name or "document path", or to words that specifically appear in the documents' title by choosing "title".
- You can limit your search to particular documents by checking the appropriate categories of documents next to the word "Search."
Broadening Your Search:
- Using OR between words will find either of the words in a document. For example, typing in abortion OR reproductive will return documents with either of those words in them.
- The search tool allows for some inexact searching. You can type in either feminist or feminists and it will find documents with either the word "feminist" or the word "feminists."
- The wildcard (*) can also be used. It can only be used at the end of a word, otherwise is is considered a normal character. If you type in econom* it will find economy, economists, and economic. It will find more results than if you just typed in econom, although that works as well.
