Content Criteria for Evaluating Television and Movies
 

1. Violence
 

How many women vs. men are the targets of murder, rape, assault, domestic violence, verbal abuse or harassment?
 
 
 

Do you feel that any violent content was justified in an attempt to make a point?
 
 
 

Was any violence glorified or used as simple entertainment?
 
 
 

2. Gender Composition / Stereotypes
 

How many women vs. men are in the cast?
 
 
 

Is the cast racially/ethnically diverse? Are there any lesbian or gay characters?
 
 
 

Describe any positive role models for women/girls:
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Describe any stereotypes in the roles women, girls and people of color play:

(e.g.: airhead, tramp, vengeful bitch, helpless victim, opportunistic welfare mother, drug dealer, etc)
 
 
 
 

3. Sexual Exploitation
 

Describe the use of female characters as sex objects: Do they exist only to complement or seduce male characters? Are they dressed in especially revealing clothing? Are they treated with respect; are they valued for their skills and intelligence?
 
 
 
 

Do you feel that any sexual content was justified in an attempt to make a point?
 
 
 
 

4. Social Responsibility
 

How do you relate to the plot, action and characters: Does the story have any relevance to everyday people's lives - does it address issues such as economics, birth control, childcare, consequences to actions, etc? Are a variety of body types, ages and abilities presented?
