Suggested Actions
-
Picket the FOX affiliate in your community. Carry signs that proclaim:
"FOX is a Network of Shame!" and "FOX Turns Women Off!" and "Return the
Airwaves to the Public!" and "Watch Out, Listen Up! Women Want quality
Programming!"
-
Deliver an over-sized certificate of appreciation to your local NBC station,
thanking them for programming woman-positive and socially responsible shows.
Ask your NBC affiliate to encourage their network to continue providing
quality primetime content, and to pass over programs that glamorize violence
and sexual exploitation.
-
Petition your town's mayor or city council to proclaim Watch Out, Listen
Up! Media Awareness Day. Hold a rally and or march to demand improved programming
that benefits the public and eliminates stereotypes.
-
Make a big report card giving FOX an "F" for biased and socially irresponsible
programming, and take it to your local station. Have a news conference
in front of the station before you deliver it to the station's president
or general manager. Get as many community leaders as possible to join you.
-
Circulate the Watch Out, Listen Up! petition at grocery stores,
on campuses and anywhere people gather. Have a big report card and signs
(see above) to attract attention.
-
Organize a FOX blackout in your community. Encourage folks to tune in to
media activism for one night. Have house parties (see house party kit)
or demonstrate in front of the local affiliate.
-
Start a Media Action Team to monitor programming and organize actions in
your community. Kick off the team with a picket or house party.
