SUGGESTED VALENTINE'S DAY ACTIONS
January 2000
-
Stage a mock wedding ceremony and include wedding traditions like breaking
a wine glass or throwing rice. Guests can hold NOW rounds and signs supporting
same-sex marriage as the couple drives away in a car with a sign that says,
"Just Married - NOT!," or other slogans. Be sure to make your signs two-sided.
-
Celebrate the anniversaries of same-sex couples in your community. Throw
a community party for them and have attendees write letters or sign petitions
in support of equal marriage. (This action could be a fundraiser.)
-
Make Valentine's Day cards that encourage people to stop hate crimes. Use
slogans like, "Have a Heart -- Stop Hate Crimes!" or "Make Love -- Not
Hate Crimes!" These cards can be sold to activists to sign and collected
for delivery to public officials.
-
Make cards that include a message like "Have a heart this Valentine's Day.
Support long-term, committed same-sex relationships." Deliver the cards
to public officials.
-
Take large red cardboard "broken hearts" to the steps of city hall and
protest the fact that long-term same-sex relationships are not legally
recognized, or use them to symbolize the survivors and victims of hate
crimes.
-
Organize a speak-out with lesbian and gay couples of diverse backgrounds
discussing how marriage discrimination affects their lives. Have heterosexual
couples discuss the benefits they receive because they are allowed to we
-
If your state has passed a limitation on marriage law, plan a rally at
the capital or city hall to protest the unjust law.
-
Arrange for a same-sex couple to apply for a marriage license. Have a rally
outside of the licensing office.
-
Protest a newspaper that does not include same-sex unions and anniversary
announcements. Launch a letter-writing campaign as part of the demonstration.
-
Gather progressive allies, including members of supportive religious communities,
and hold a freedom to marry rally or an anti-hate crimes vigil. Invite
people to speak about their experiences.
-
Picket a homophobe! Let's face it, there are plenty of them to target.
Pick the homophobe in your community who is most deserving of an enthusiastic
NOW picket.
