Take Action on Campus for Women's Herstory Month
During March organize an event on your campus to raise awareness about women's fight for equality throughout herstory, and the future of the feminist movement. Use the resources you have available, such as women professors, local NOW leaders, or other local women who make positive change in your community as speakers, experts on an issue, or stories. Celebrate women's wins and discuss what still needs to be done!
*GIVE THEM SNAPS*
This March, give props to women who don't always get attention for the community work they do. Celebrate a different woman each day by passing out information, tabling, or placing an announcement on your school's calendar recognizing the day.
*WRITE ABOUT GREAT WOMEN*
Write an article for your school's paper about the importance of women's herstory month and highlight young women's contributions to society. Discuss some of the current challenges to women's rights. Suggest that your school paper feature a different woman of achievement from your community or from herstory each day of the month.
*MAKE THEM FAMOUS*
Have each school/department in your school create a poster honoring a woman from their field. Display them for the month at your student center.
*MAP IT OUT*
Create a timeline of the women's movement on your campus or of women's contributions in your local community and post it where it will be seen by lots of students (student union, academic building, or outside). Be sure to use bright colors and pictures!
*HONOR WOMEN*
Organize an event or reception, and give an award to an important woman in your community or on your campus. Don't forget supportive alums!
*TEACH IT*
Many schools' history programs do not give a full portrayal of women's herstory. Organize a Women's Herstory 101, and talk about the importance of teaching women's herstory in our schools. If your university does not have a women's studies department, consider petitioning the administration to establish one.
*GET THEM ELECTED*
Celebrate women's right to vote by inviting a local elected woman to speak about the importance of having women run for office.
*SLAM IT OUT*
Organize a women's herstory poetry slam.
*BE CREATIVE*
There are endless ways to honor women, think of a new and exciting way to highlight women's herstory month on your campus.
